California dental license renewal: deadlines, CE, and what to keep on file

A California dental license, RDH license, or RDA permit expires on the last day of the license holder's birth month, on a biennial (every two years) cycle. Someone born in July renews by July 31; someone born in February renews by the last day of February — which is the 29th in a leap year.

The practical consequence is the part practices underestimate: because every person has a different birthday, renewals are scattered across the entire year. A ten-person office can face a renewal deadline in nearly every month, which is exactly why a single shared spreadsheet with one "renewal date" column tends to fail.

Working on an expired license or permit is unlicensed practice. California's Business and Professions Code provides for citations and fines, and enforcement is not limited to the individual — a practice owner who permits work on a lapsed credential carries liability too. The defensible position is boring and paperwork-shaped: current credentials on file, dated training records, and the ability to produce them quickly.
